Understand "FTP"

Once you have completed your website, you're ready to upload it to the internet.  To ftp it... File Transfer Protocol.

Some web editors have a FTP facility included in their design.  Your hosting account's Control Panel also has the facility.  However, its preferable that you have separate FTP software installed on your own computer to handle this process.

There are many FTP software programs available and most have free downloads or a period with free use.  FileZilla is free, fully functional and preferred by many.

Once you have installed the FTP program on your computer, open it.

FTP programs show 2 panels.  "Local" - your hard-drive on the left.  And "Remote" - your website on the right.

On the "Local" side, locate your website on your hard-drive and open the folder to display the files you wish to upload.

Find the tab (Site Manager) where you register your site details i.e. the URL, User Id and Password. Make sure you are online and click "connect" which opens your hosting account.

You will notice several folders but the only one that will concern you at the moment is the root directory "public_html".  This is where your website will reside either in the main root directory or in a sub-directory that you have created.

In the software find the transfer mode: this will be either binary or ASCII or you might have an "automatic" facility.

Click "transfer" (top line in Filezilla). "Transfer type" and if possible select "Auto".

When uploading your html pages (your site) select ASCII from "transfer".Use Binary for raw data (graphics, multimedia & executable files).

Upload your files to the root directory or appropriate sub-directory on the server.

Disconnect from the server once uploaded.

Go to your web browser, enter your domain name and test the pages of your web site to ensure everything is correct.  Do the links to other pages, other sites, payment processors etc., all go to the right addresses?

Congratulations!

Your new site is now on the world wide web.

Once you've zipped and uploaded your items for sale, change the price to zero

and go right through the sales process as if you were a purchaser... from clicking on the "buy now" button on your site to downloading the product.

Unzip the zip file to ensure everything that should be included.... is.

Finished the check through?  Now change the price back to the correct figure.

Christine and I wish you every success with your new site.
